A belt cleaner system scrapes carry-back off the belt at and just past the discharge, so material does not travel back under the conveyor and build up on the return idlers, the tail pulley, the take-up and the structure. Most conveyors run a primary cleaner on the head pulley and a secondary cleaner immediately after it; heavy carry-back or sticky material adds a tertiary or return-side cleaner. The right combination depends on the belt, the pulley and what is being conveyed.

Choosing
Cleaner positions on the conveyor

| Primary (pre-cleaner) | Against the head-pulley face, below the material trajectory | Removes the bulk of the carry-back. Full-width blade — polyurethane or tipped — held to the belt by a tensioner. |
| Secondary | Just past the head pulley, off the pulley arc | Takes off the thin film the primary leaves. Usually segmented, individually sprung blades, often tungsten-tipped. |
| Tertiary / return-side | Along the return run or at the tail | Catches the last carry-back and protects the tail pulley, take-up and return idlers on heavy or sticky duties. |
