Pulley lagging compared: rubber vs ceramic vs vulcanised

Short answer
Use diamond-grooved rubber lagging on general drive and non-drive pulleys in dry duty. Use ceramic (embedded-tile) lagging on drive pulleys in wet or high-tension duty where slip and wear are the problem — it gives the highest friction and the longest life. Choose the application method — hot-vulcanised, cold-bonded, weld-on or slide-on — by whether the pulley can leave the conveyor.
Lagging does two jobs: it gives the drive pulley grip so the belt does not slip, and it protects the pulley shell. Pick the type on the duty, and the method on the access.
Types
- Plain rubber, diamond-grooved — general drive and non-drive pulleys, dry duty. The default.
- Ceramic (embedded tiles) — drive pulleys in wet or high-tension duty. Highest friction and wear life; heavier and more expensive. Available in full-coverage or dimpled patterns.
- Rubber on non-drive pulleys — thinner, protective; often plain (ungrooved) on bend and tail pulleys.
Application methods
- Hot-vulcanised — strongest bond, workshop only
- Cold-bonded strip — good bond, can be done in situ with the right prep and temperature
- Weld-on ceramic pads — fast field fitment onto a steel shell
- Slide-on sleeve — a pre-made lagging sleeve pulled over the pulley face
