OEM vs quality aftermarket parts

Short answer
Use genuine OEM parts where fit, safety certification or warranty depend on it — safety components, hazardous-area equipment, parts inside a tight tolerance stack. Use a quality aftermarket alternative for wear parts and commodity items where the profile, material and dimensions can be verified. The deciding factor is whether the equivalence can be proven, not the badge.
“OEM or aftermarket?” is on every RFQ. The honest answer is: it depends on what you can verify.
Lean OEM when…
- The part carries a safety rating, an Ex marking or a certificate that is a condition of use
- It sits inside a tight tolerance stack where a small deviation causes a knock-on failure
- A warranty on the parent machine depends on genuine parts
- The part is electronic or software-matched to the machine
Quality aftermarket is fine when…
- It is a wear part with a well-understood profile — liners, jaw plates, GET, screen media, chute liners
- The dimensions and the material specification can both be confirmed against the original
- Lead time or obsolescence makes the OEM route impractical
- It is a commodity item — fasteners, seals, standard bearings, V-belts
The checks that make an equivalent safe
- Dimensional match on every mating and functional surface
- Material / alloy specification, not just “hardened steel”
- For electrical: voltage, current, contact arrangement, safety category, IP and approvals
- Any certificate the mine requires for that item
A good supplier tells you which of these has been confirmed and which is “subject to final dimensional confirmation” — and never implies a universal drop-in where one does not exist.
